Standing for election
Any GCU student can stand for election on to the Executive Committee and no experience is required as full training is provided for all roles. In order to stand for election, each candidate must complete a nomination form and trustee declaration form and return them to the Returning Officer in room NH 113 in the Students' Association by 4pm on Friday 19th of February. Positions available
During the elections nine different roles are elected to make up the Executive Committee. Four of these positions are full time paid positions (projected salary for 2010/11 is £15,339) and five of these are part-time voluntary roles which are taken on alongside studying. The Executive Committee are responsible for representing student views to the University and in the wider world, providing activities for GCU students such as sports clubs and societies and campaigning on issues that matter to students. Serving as an Executive Committee member is an excellent way to improve your key skills and make yourself more employable in a very difficult job market. Campaigning
Once you have made the decision to stand for election, you have to go out and convince your fellow students to vote for you! Each year candidates wanting to serve on the Executive Committee campaign to get elected by putting up posters, making videos, creating social networking pages and, most importantly, talking to students! In order to help candidates, the Students' Association will print 30 A3 colour posters and 600 flyers for each candidate and help them film a short video for the Students' Association website which will be displayed alongside their manifesto. Candidates may also use social networks like Facebook to promote their campaign, speak to groups of students at the start of lectures and go round campus to convince individual students to vote for them. Candidates are also allowed to spend £30 of their own money on other promotional materials for their campaign. Candidates will also be invited to attend a Question Time event where students will ask them questions about what they would do if they were elected. Voting
Once students have made their mind up about who to vote for it they can vote in one of four locations between 9am and 6pm on Thursday 4th March. The locations for voting are as follows:
Saltire Centre: 9am - 6pm
Refectory: 9am - 3pm
Students' Association: 10am - 6pm
Govan Mbeki building: 9am - 4pm
When voting, students will be asked to rank their candidates in order of preference rather than place an 'X' beside their name. This means that when voting you should write a number '1' beside the person you want to win the election. You may also express a second, third, fourth and so on preferences for other candidates by writing '2', '3', '4' respectively beside their names.
