Semester Restructure LATEST – Semester Restructure Team Recruitment
To follow on from the email in March (below), the Students’ Association are setting up a project group to discuss the restructure of the semester proposed to happen in 2010/2011. This is where you guys get involved in shaping the future of your University. Throughout the next year, we have representation on the panel tasked with implementing the change. To ensure that all student issues and concerns are taken into account, we are putting together a team of students who will represent the views of the student body.
Membership of the group is open to all students. We need the views of everyone regardless if you are studying part time, full time, postgrad, undergrad, research including students from all different distinctions and backgrounds to make this group a success!! It does not matter if you have been involved in the Students’ Association before as a class rep or not. Membership of this group will be important for the future of YOUR student experience, it will look great on your CV and there will be free food for you.
The initial meeting is on Tuesday 19th May at 2pm in NH208 (Students Association meeting room). We will be joined by Sue Scott, Pro Vice Chancellor for Learning Innovation, who is the University lead on the change to the academic year. It will be an informal meeting with Sue presenting the proposals and taking any questions you have on it. Please reply to this or email Kevin Ward at Kevin.ward@gcal.ac.uk ASAP!! I realise it is exam time and that many of you have other commitments so if you are unable to make the meeting but would like your views know then please email Kevin who will include these opinions in the meeting.
Many thanks,
Paddy

Dear Students,
This morning, Glasgow Caledonian University Senate recommended the restructure of semesters for academic year 2010/2011.
The restructure is to include the call from students to have the exams before the winter break, from the Caledonian Conference ’08 and Caledonian Student Parliament. The coming year will provide a chance for everyone to get involved in the final structure, students and staff alike. This will be to ensure that all issues identified in the consultation (such as potential coursework and timetabling issues) in addition to any other issues that will arise, can be resolved for the benefit of students. In turn, this will give us a better chance to gain the full benefits that the semester restructure could potentially deliver. These benefits include moving to a possible Trimester system, spreading students’ workload, a better induction for students, a broader range of assessment methods (becoming less dependant on the final exams), having the winter exams in December, an academic year more inclusive of all levels of students and in particular, the possible positive impact on progression rates for students in 1st year. Most institutions in Scotland have similar structures and there are reports of student satisfaction at the structure.
Thanks to all those who have contributed so far in the consultation, if you would like to ask any questions then please keep in touch with the Students’ Association to ensure your views shape the future of your University.
Many thanks,
Paddy
